How the Thai Gold Price per Baht Is Calculated from the World Price
International news quotes gold in US dollars per troy ounce (XAU/USD). In Thailand, gold is traded by the "baht-weight" at 96.5% purity. Here is how to convert one into the other.
Units you need
- 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams
- 1 baht-weight of gold bar = 15.244 grams
- Standard Thai gold purity is 96.5%
The formula
Thai gold price per baht ≈ world price (USD/oz) × exchange rate (THB/USD) ÷ 31.1035 × 15.244 × 0.965
Example: with gold at $4,000 and USD/THB at 33.50, the reference price is about 63,400 THB.
Why shop prices differ
- Shops add a premium and a buy/sell spread
- Jewellery includes a making charge
- The Gold Traders Association updates its price in rounds, not every second
